MainePERS (and The Retirement Process)
MainePERS is the Maine Public Employees Retirement System. They help state of Maine public employees prepare for retirement. Teachers are contributing members of MainePERS.
Once you know you are going to retire within a year, you need to begin the retirement process by contacting MainePERS (Maine Public Employees Retirement System) to get an estimate of your earnings and complete your retirement application paperwork. They conduct Retirement Planning Sessions for Teacher Members where they explain the benefit payment options, how benefits are paid, and provide Staff assistance in filling out the retirement application. Visit their teacher member webpage for information on how to get an estimate of your earnings and for the MainePERS Retirement Planning Sessions for Teacher Members schedule. These sessions often fill up quickly, so sign up as soon as you make that decision to start the retirement process. The MainePERS links for details about teacher member benefit information, benefit options and retirement forms can be found here.
We are not posting forms and applications because they are frequently revised. It is best to visit the MainePERS site.
